Varifocals

Varifocals that actually work for you.

Not all varifocals are equal. The difference is in the lens design, the measurements and the fitting — which is exactly where we take more care than most.

One lens, every distance

Clear vision from the road to the page — without the line.

Varifocals let you see far, intermediate and near through a single, seamless lens. Done well, they feel effortless. Done poorly, they swim, narrow and frustrate. The difference is almost always in the lens chosen and how precisely it is fitted.

Why ours feel different

The difference is engineered, not advertised.

We work with premium and personalised varifocal designs — including Nikon Lenswear — chosen for wider fields of clear vision and smoother transitions. Then we measure and fit them precisely around your eyes and your chosen frame, so the lens performs exactly where you use it.

What makes a great varifocal

Four things we never cut corners on.

Lens design

Premium varifocals use sophisticated, often personalised designs that give wider, clearer fields of vision and far less of the "swim" cheaper lenses are known for.

Precise measurements

A varifocal is only as good as its fitting. We take detailed measurements so each zone of the lens sits exactly where your eyes use it.

The right frame

Frame shape and depth matter for varifocals. Our stylists guide you to frames that suit your face and give your lenses room to perform.

Proper adaptation support

We explain how to use your varifocals and review them afterwards, so you settle in quickly and comfortably.

Varifocal lenses are part of how we approach lenses and the Eyewear Wardrobe — the right lens for the right moment, fitted properly.

Settling in

We do not just sell varifocals — we make sure they work.

A varifocal fitting is the start, not the end. We show you how to use your lenses and review them afterwards, so you adapt quickly and stay comfortable.

If anything does not feel right, bring them back — small adjustments and the right advice usually make all the difference.

Varifocal FAQs

Good to know.

What are varifocals?

Varifocals are lenses that let you see clearly at all distances — far, intermediate (such as screens) and near (such as reading) — through a single, seamless lens, with no visible line. They are ideal once reading glasses alone no longer keep up with everyday life.

Are premium varifocals worth it?

The difference between a basic and a premium varifocal is significant. Better lens designs give wider, clearer zones of vision, smoother transitions and far less distortion — which usually means you adapt faster and wear them more comfortably all day. We will always explain the difference honestly so you can choose what is right for you.

How long does it take to get used to varifocals?

Most people adapt within a few days to a couple of weeks. A precise fitting and the right lens design make a real difference here — and if anything does not feel right, we will check and adjust them for you.

What is the difference between cheap and premium varifocals?

It is largely hidden in the detail: the lens design, the width of the clear zones, how smoothly the lens transitions between distances, the coatings, and the accuracy of the measurements and fitting. Premium varifocals — including personalised designs from partners such as Nikon — are engineered around how you actually use your eyes.

Can I get varifocal prescription sunglasses?

Yes. Varifocal lenses can be made as prescription sunglasses, including polarised and tinted options — ideal for driving and the outdoors. Ask us about a varifocal pair as part of an eyewear wardrobe.

Do you offer varifocals on the NHS?

An NHS sight test covers your examination where you are eligible, and an NHS optical voucher may contribute towards lenses for some patients. We will explain your options and any contribution clearly before you decide.
